Johann Sebastian Paetsch - violoncello
Born in Colorado Springs USA in 1964 of musical parents, Johann Sebastian Paetsch began cello studies with his father Günther Paetsch at the age of 5, giving his first recital when only 6. His extensive experience in chamber music began in early childhood when, along with his large and talented family of 9, he progressed through almost the entire chamber repertoire for strings, performing it with his family group in concert throughout the U.S.
Johann Sebastian Paetsch studied at Butler University with Arkady Orlovsky where he received his Bachelor’s Degree ‘Cum Laude’ and at Yale University with
Aldo Parisot, where he earned his Certificate of Music Degree and later his Master’s Degree in Music. He went on to study at the ‘Musikhochschule Lübeck’ with
David Geringas where he received his ‘Konzertexamen’. He participated in masterclasses with Yo-Yo Ma, Rostropovitch, Starker, Greenhouse and Micha Maisky and as a member of the ‘Yale Cellists,’ he took part in the recording of two world- famous CD’s.
A recipient of numerous prizes, Johann Sebastian Paetsch was awarded the top prize in the Emmanuel Feuermann Competition and first place in the Young Musicians Foundation Competition in Los Angeles. He was also highly successful in the ARD Competition, Munich, in the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and in the Rostropovitch Competition, held in Paris.
Renowned not only for his technical prowess but also for a gorgeous depth of tone and profound musicality, Johann Sebastian Paetsch enjoys a distinguished international career as one of the foremost cellists of his generation, performing regularly in Japan, Europe and in America. He has collaborated with prominent artists of the quality of Vadim Repin, Gidon Kremer, Jean-Bernard Pommier, Eduard Brunner and the Wilanow Quartet.
As soloist, he has appeared in many major capitals of the world, showing no hesitation in performing the concertos of Dvorak, Shostakovitch, Prokofiev, Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Haydn. Performances and recordings of the Brahms Double in collaboration with sister and violinist Michaela Paetsch, took place in the USA, Canada, Switzerland and in Germany. He has been featured with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in performances and recordings of the Boccherini, Saint-Säens, Kabelevsky and the two Haydn Concertos, as well as Struass’s ‘Don Quixote’ with conductor Alain Lombard.
He plays a cello made in 1730 by Matteo Goffriller. Since 1992 he has been First Solo Cellist of the
Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, Switzerland.

Nato in Colorado, Johann Sebastian Paetsch ha cominciato a suonare in giovanissima età insieme alla sua talentuosa famiglia. Ha poi continuato su questa strada vincendo importanti premi, tra i quali il Young Musician’s Foundation Award a Los Angeles e The Feuermann Competition. Ha studiato con Aldo Parisot e David Geringas e ha conseguito titoli di laurea in prestigiose università quali quella di Yale e la Musikhochschule di Lubecca. E’ oggigiorno richiesto sia come solista che come musicista da camera dai più importanti centri di tutto il mondo.
Come solista ha suonato, fra molti altri, i concerti di Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Prokofief, Schumann e Haydn e, insieme a sua sorella Michaela, violinista, il Doppio Concerto di Brahms. Appassionato anche di musica da camera, Johann Sebastian Paetsch si è esibito con numerosi artisti di fama internazionale. Il suo modo di far musica è inconfondibile e le sue interpretazioni si distinguono per la loro grande originalità. Attualmente è primo violoncello solista dell’Orchestra della Svizzera italiana.
